Navigating Global Uncertainty: Kuala Lumpur’s Record-Breaking Trade Performance an Opportunity for Italy
Article by Consul Ravidran Manogaran, Malaysian Consulate in Milan
In an era defined by global supply chain volatility and shifting geopolitical alliances, Malaysia has emerged not just as a resilient economy, but as a historic trade powerhouse. As of late 2025, Malaysia’s trade performance has reached unprecedented milestones, offering Italian companies a stable, high-tech, and strategically located partner for sourcing and industrial collaboration.
In 2025, Malaysia’s trade trajectory reached record heights, defying global headwinds to mark its most successful year in history. For the first time, total trade surpassed the RM3 trillion mark, reaching RM3.061 trillion, a 6.3% year-on-year increase. Exports exceeded RM1 trillion for the fifth consecutive year, climbing 6.5% to a record RM1.607 trillion. Meanwhile, imports grew by 6.2% to RM1.455 trillion, resulting in a trade surplus of RM151.80 billion. This represents Malaysia’s 28th consecutive year of trade surplus since 1998, a testament to the nation’s disciplined economic management and competitive edge in the global marketplace.
Malaysia’s bilateral trade with Italy has also experienced impressive growth, aligning with Malaysia’s overall global trade performance. The total trade volume between the two countries increased by 14.2%, reaching RM16.69 billion (€3.45 billion). Malaysia’s exports to Italy rose by 12.7%, totalling RM7.581 billion (€1.564 billion), while imports from Italy grew by 15.4% to RM9.11 billion (€1.885 billion). Malaysia’s main exports to Italy include agricultural and chemical products, iron and steel products, electrical and electronic products, machinery, equipment and parts, as well as manufactures of metal. Conversely, Malaysia’s primary imports from Italy consist of machinery, equipment and parts, optical and scientific instruments, chemicals and chemical products, jewellery, and electrical and electronic products.
Strengthening the Malaysia-Italy Corridor
For Italian industries, these figures represent a significant de-risking opportunity. As the European Union remains one of Malaysia’s top trading partners, the bilateral relationship with Italy is gaining new momentum. Italian companies, renowned for precision engineering and high-end manufacturing, are increasingly looking toward Malaysia to secure high-value components and raw materials.
Malaysia’s export growth in 2025 was underpinned by its deep integration into technology-driven supply chains, particularly in semiconductors, green energy, and advanced chemicals. Malaysia’s extensive network of global partners and various Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) across multiple continents offers Italian businesses a seamless gateway into the broader Asian market. According to Mr. Ravidran Manogaran, Consul & Trade Commissioner of Malaysia in Milan, these record-breaking figures are a clear signal that Malaysia is a sophisticated industrial trading hub. In an era of protectionism, Malaysia offers the predictability and quality that "Made in Italy" standards demand, serving as a critical sourcing partner to sustain global operations.
To facilitate these partnerships, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) invites Italian enterprises to engage with premier trade platforms. For those specialising in precision engineering, automotive technology, and microelectronics, SEMICON Southeast Asia (5–7 May 2026 at MITEC, Kuala Lumpur) offers a vital hub to connect with semiconductor leaders.
